Electrical Engineer - HVDC

Who Are We?
Thaleron is a seed-stage startup with a big goal, to make a carbon-free grid drastically cheaper than fossil fuels. There are three core foundations to achieving this - generation, storage and transmission.
We were originally founded to develop an entirely new mechanical energy storage technology. We have proven it in the lab, and are now building our first scale prototypes.
More recently, we've been working on the other foundation that is ripe for innovation, transmission. The DC transmission grid is central to large-scale renewable energy deployment, and the technologies and operating principles will significantly differ from traditional AC systems.
Your Team
We believe in small superstar teams, with high autonomy and responsibility. As an Electrical Engineer at Thaleron, you’ll be part of a team of world experts, developing new concepts, rapidly building and testing to destruction.
Our team is onsite an average of three days per week at our HQ in Maidenhead, creating an environment conducive to rapid innovation and seamless teamwork.
Your Role
We are tackling a novel challenge. We're seeking Electrical Engineers with a passion for theoretical problem-solving and practical application. You'll play a pivotal role in shaping and leading this project, modeling complex electrical systems, and delivering innovative solutions that redefine what's possible.
What you need to succeed:
Cultural:
- Very strong team player. Working well as part of our team is, if anything, more important than individual brilliance.
- You'll need to be comfortable with ambiguity, able to work from first principles and have an innate passion for building things quickly.
Technical:
- You apply your analytical skills to rapidly and iteratively develop prototype solutions
- Strong background in high voltage AC and DC systems, including design, analysis, and testing
- Proficiency in power electronics, control systems, and grid integration
- Exceptional analytical skills to solve complex problems from first principles - calculating electrical stresses, losses, and system stability.
Candidate Journey:
1. Talent Screen - video call (30-45 minutes) - an introductory call with our talent consultant.
2. Technical Interview - video call (60 minutes) - initial, technically focused interview with our founders.
3. Onsite meeting (half-day) - in-person meeting with the team in central London. You'll participate in a collaborative task and spend valuable time with the whole team.
Along the way, we might also ask you to speak with one of our major investors.
This process is designed to give you every chance to get the measure of us, and us of you. The various stages give you a fair opportunity to show your unique strengths and qualities, and enables each of us to establish if we’re a good fit for the other.
Please share with us any individual needs or reasonable adjustments we may need to make in advance of commencing the interview process with us.
